Christopher Hoal, AIA is the Director of Healthcare Design for Gresham Smith’s healthcare practice. Chris sets the market’s design process and quality, leads major pursuits, and mentors emerging professionals. As a project designer, he works intimately with clients to bring cohesion to their aspirations and vision. Chris is deeply interested in the process of design and believes a transparent, inclusive, and iterative process leads to better outcomes.

Chris was named the “HCD 10 Architect” of 2024 by Healthcare Design. His recent award-winning design work includes the Baptist Health Care Pensacola Hospital, Kaiser Permanente Lutherville-Timonium Medical Center, UP Health System Marquette Hospital, The Nashville Food Project Headquarters, and “Invisible: The Hospital of the Future is No Hospital.” Chris’s professional associations include the AIA AAH (Academy of Architecture for Health) knowledge community where he serves on the committee on design. His work has been featured at the 2024 World Business Forum, Fast Company Magazine, and Healthcare Design Magazine. Chris’s recent speaking engagements include a keynote address at Healthcare Design Conference, The ASHE Summit on Health Facility Planning Design & Construction (PDC), and The Delve Series Conference. Chris graduated manga cum laude from Mississippi State University and lives in Nashville, TN.
