Building Science for Architects: Understanding & Designing for Moisture Movement

Building science tells us how buildings perform, especially with regard to moisture movement. This session will help designers better understand how moisture moves through airflow and by diffusion. Join us to examine the permeability of materials and its impact on the performance of enclosure assemblies. You'll pick up strategies for detailing assemblies to meet both the designer's code-mandated responsibilities and airtightness testing requirements. Plus, learn from project examples demonstrating the impact of different approaches on the moisture performance of an enclosure.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discover how to differentiate between how moisture moves through airflow and how it moves by way of diffusion through materials and assemblies.
  2. Examine code-mandated responsibilities regarding building envelope details.
  3. Develop strategies for meeting standard-of-care obligations related to including details in your design documents.
  4. Explore the new whole-building airtightness testing requirements and how to be prepared for them on your next project.
